One in 20 people will live with a rare disease at some point in their life – but there is no cure for the majority of rare diseases and people often have difficulties getting the correct diagnosis. There are more than 6,000 identified rare diseases around the world, and while each disease may affect only a handful of people the total number of people directly affected is around 300 million people.
