Worldwide about 10% of pregnant women and 13% of women who have just given birth experience a mental disorder, primarily depression. In developing countries this is even higher, i.e. 15.6% during pregnancy and 19.8% after child birth. In severe cases mothers’ suffering might be so severe that they may even commit suicide. In addition, the affected mothers cannot function properly. As a result, the children’s growth and development may be negatively affected as well. Maternal mental disorders are treatable. Effective interventions can be delivered even by well-trained non-specialist health providers.
World Health Organization
Maternal mental health disorders are the #1 complications of childbirth, and impact up to one in five women in the United States. Here are some amazing resources for maternal mental health support:
TheBlueDot Project
TheBlueDot was created by Peggy O’Neil Nosti, a mom who suffered from postpartum anxiety with her third child. The blue dot is a symbol of solidarity and support. The project seeks to raise awareness of maternal mental health disorders and combat stigma and shame through sharing our stories.
Postpartum Support International
Postpartum Support International (PSI) was founded in 1987 by Jane Honikman and seeks to increase awareness among public and professional communities about the emotional changes that women experience during pregnancy and postpartum. PSI offers a free help line for women who are struggling: 1(800) 944 – 4773.
Maternal Mental Health Leadership Alliance
The Maternal Mental Health Leadership Alliance (MMHLA) was founded in 2019 as a nonpartisan 501(c)3 nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting the mental health of mothers and childbearing people in the United States with a focus on national policy and health equity. We advocate for improved mental health care during pregnancy and postpartum; we build partnerships and convene experts to formulate solutions; and we curate information to advance the field of maternal mental health.
Maternal Mental Health Alliance
The Maternal Mental Health Alliance (MMHA) is a UK-wide charity and network of over 120 organisations, dedicated to ensuring all women and families impacted by perinatal mental health problems have access to high-quality, compassionate care and support. We bring the maternal mental health community together and make change happen by combining the power of real-life experience with clinical and professional expertise.
Policy Center for Maternal Mental Health
In March 2023, 2020 Mom rebranded as the Policy Center for Maternal Mental Health – their mission is to close gaps in maternal mental health care. All pregnant and postpartum mothers should have ready access to standardized, evidence-based maternal mental health care from providers they respect and trust.
